Sci-Fi Film Opening Conventions

Sci-Fi Film Opening Conventions

The Setting and Time is a key feature of Sci-Fi Opening. Establishing when and where the drama takes place is essential because some Sci-Fi movies are based in the dystopian future or on alternative worlds and versions of earth. For example, our film opening is set on Mars, in the future, meaning it is unfamiliar and alien in context of our audiences perception.

Another key convention of Sci-Fi films is the development of technology, like robots, spaceships and medicine. It is used to create a 'dialogue' between these new technological breakthroughs, whether it be technology, scientific principles or political systems, and the imagination of the audience. New scientific principles are things such as time travel and new political systems are how dystopian or utopian societies function. In our film's opening sequence, we use POV shots from the perspective of a robot reinforcing this idea of futuristic science.
